Athelstan publishes books and software related to second language learning and corpus linguistics. The company has been producing technology and language products since 1985. For the first decade, Athelstan focussed on the use of technology in language learning, which is now taken for granted, but at that time most of the innovations were due to small companies and to individual teachers who produced their own software. Much of this activity centred around the CALL-IS of TESOL. At that time, rather spend money on advertising, we published the Athelstan Newsletter on Technology and Language Learning, which was sent free to teachers in the US.
In the second decade, Athelstan has become known more for its concordance software: MonoConc and ParaConc, which is used by a wide variety of individuals and institutions around the world, including one, perhaps two, users in Papua New Guinea.
Looking forward to the next decade, we plan to continue producing text analysis software and to continue development of the newer products, ParaConc and Collocate, in particular. In addition, we will push for the integration of corpus-based analyses in language learning through the CorpusLab series of ESL books and through the development of language learning software and the CorpusLab website. We are also becoming more "digital" and are making books and software available for immediate download.
