This book is the first in a series of CorpusLAB titles which help students to deal with English as it is used in daily life. Instead of relying on general intuitions about language, these titles are based on research on American English corpora (such as CSPAE). As a result of this research, all the example sentences in the book more accurately reflect the patterns of English that the learner is likely to encounter.

For this particular title, frequent phrasal verbs have been identified and presented along with an indication of their frequency in spoken and written texts. For each phrasal verb, several meanings are illustrated using sentences based on corpus data. The exercises are also based on modified corpus examples.

An important feature in the format of the units is the presentation,where appropriate, of the frequent collocates of each phrasal verb. For example, for one common meaning of the verb "look at", the pattern is "the report/study looked at ..." In this example, "report" is a collocation of "look at". Thus rather than focussing solely on the phrasal verb itself, we present examples that show the phrasal in a wider context. This wider context provides clues to the meaning of the phrasal verb. And by working through the examples and exercises, students are preparing well for the language encountered in everyday situations.
